Gasping, Vittoria's eyes flew up to find herself inches away from her husband's unreadable face. And in the next moment his lips were already on hers, kissing her as if he was staking a claim.

A deep sense of irritation flooded her veins. She wouldn't put up with this ownership behavior. Not in her era, and certainly not in this place. Vittoria pushed him aside with all her might, but Maximus pulled back almost instantly.

Without thinking twice, she slapped him across the face and froze in fear, now waiting for his possible retaliation. This man was capable of doing everything. She saw him carrying out his duties.

To her utter surprise, Maximus seemed to be fazed by her actions, fixing his scrutinizing gaze on hers. He rubbed his left cheek, as though making sure it really happened. And then a throaty laugh escaped him like he was amused.
Staring back at him in frustration, Vittoria raised her eyebrows.

"That was worth it." His laughter abruptly subsided, and after casting her one final brooding look, he turned on his heel and left the room.
