As I scrolled through Instagram, I stopped at a reel that caught my attention. A writer was being interviewed and asked, "What if the main character was just a normal person-someone who struggles, lives a boring life, and doesn't always get what they want?" The writer seemed offended and passionately argued that there is no such thing as an uninteresting life. According to them, everyone suffers in their own way, and every person has a story worth telling.
But I didn't agree. Not everyone has plot armor, where their struggles lead to a grand resolution. Some people live without dramatic arcs, without lessons wrapped in poetic endings. Suffering exists, but not everyone wants to turn it into a narrative. Sometimes, life is just life-messy, uneventful, and without an audience. And maybe that's okay. Life can be routine, the same every day, with changes so small they go unnoticed.
Then I thought to myself-what if? What if I wrote about people's boring daily lives? What if I showed the writer that life isn't the same in books and films? What if I captured the everyday existence of normal people-how would it sound?
