"They say anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes is granted a wish."

Zoë Biddcombe has been an artist since day one.

She's also been mute since day one.

Never having spoken a word, you would think she doesn't have any friends. Only because of art does she have, but one friend, Abigale.

Zoë decides for just one day to actually go grocery shopping and pick her sister up from daycare while her mother stays home, and later regrets it when she finds out what happens to her one and only friend in the world.

But then, there's Levi. Typical bad boy Levi, who's upset by how completely cliché (and girl-like) his life becomes when he suddenly takes an interest in the girl he runs into while walking out of his therapist's office.

To cope with everything that's happened, Zoë does what she's always done, stay silent and fold paper. Paper cranes that is. She started the day Abigale died. Five days later she ran into Levi and dropped one from her bag, leaving him wondering what the hell it was and why she had it. She didn't even bother saying sorry to him. He certainly wasn't going to say it if she didn't.

The next time they see each other is on the school roof, a place that's forbidden and every goody-two-shoes student usually stays away from. Neither of them expect to see the other there and they don't expect to like it up there with each other, but they do.
