Evangeline Melgern, daughter of Navarre's most feared general, prepares for Conscription Day, where most 20-year-olds face deadly trials. Clad in dragon-scale armor, she is summoned by her cold and demanding father, General Melgern, who orders her to protect Violet Sorrengaill, a scribe forced into the brutal quadrant. If Violet dies due to negligence, Evangeline will be executed.
At the first challenge-a treacherous bridge-Evangeline notices candidates marked with rebellion relics, symbols of their parents' execution by her father. Among them is Xaden Riorson, the son of Fen Riorson, who was once close to Evangeline's mother before her father had him killed. She resents her father, knowing he was also responsible for her mother's death.
Alongside Violet, Rhiannon, and Dylan, Evangeline sees the trials not just as a test of survival but as a chance to break free from her father's control and reunite with Xaden and Bodhi, her closest friend. With peril ahead, she steels herself for the brutal path forward.
