"Do you make a habit of this?" he asked, his voice now a low murmur meant only for the scant inches between us.

"Of what?" My own voice sounded embarrassingly breathless.

"Of testing boundaries." His gloved fingers flexed slightly around the cane. "Of seeing how far you can push before there are... consequences."

Before I could form a retort, he did close the distance. It was one fluid, predatory step that brought him directly into my space. My back pressed fully against the doorframe. His free hand came up to settle beside my head, his forearm braced against the frame, caging me in.
