They appear, but haven't really caused any damage except to the new girl and the stability of the grove. They learn about the city and each other, but can someone of that nature really intertwine into Miami's livelihood? Gossip and reminisce can only do so much for a woman. A lesson for her: books and science will only give her outlines in her plans, rather than reasons.
