Boy 1:
"Hey, new girl! Stop right there!"
Jaanu's heart skipped a beat. She immediately lowered her head, clutching the strap of her bag tighter. She quickened her pace, hoping they'd ignore her if she didn't respond.
Boy 2:
"Hey! Didn't you hear us? We're talking to you!"
Her steps faltered. Fear gripped her, but she knew she couldn't avoid them forever. Taking a deep breath, she turned and walked toward them slowly, her head still bowed. She dared not make eye contact, her nerves getting the better of her.
Friend 1:
"So, what's your name?"
Jaanu mumbled her response, her voice barely audible.
Jaanu (softly):
"Jaanu..."
The boys laughed.
Friend 2:
"What? Speak up, scary cat. What's your name again?"
Jaanu, trembling slightly, raised her voice just enough to be heard.
Jaanu (a little louder):
"Jaanu."
Friend 1:
"And which year are you in, little Jaanu?"
Jaanu:
"First year..."
It was then that Hrithik finally spoke, his voice dripping with disdain.
Hrithik:
"Wow. She's such a scared little kitten. Look at her-can't even lift her head. What's she so afraid of? Does she think we're going to eat her or something?"
His words stung, but Jaanu remained silent.
Friend 2:
"Yeah, such an annoying girl. It's like she's imagining things in her head about us."
Jaanu flinched slightly at their words but still didn't dare to raise her head. Hrithik smirked as he leaned back, his gaze never leaving her.
Hrithik:
"Leave her. She's not even worth the time. Just another waste of space in this university."
The group laughed, but Jaanu couldn't hold back her emotions anymore. She clenched her fists, her breathing uneven. Hrithik's next words pushed her over the edge.
