I knew the way he smiled before I even turned around. The sound of his voice drifted through the house-warm, familiar, and just as unreachable as it had always been. My fingers tightened around the fabric of my dress as I forced myself to breathe, to pretend this was just another ordinary day. But it wasn't. Because today, my sister's fiancé was here. And he was the boy I had loved my entire life. I kept my back to them as she laughed, her voice carrying through the room, effortless and bright. She had always been the kind of person people gravitated toward, the kind of person who could hold his attention without even trying. And me? I had spent years standing on the sidelines, watching. Waiting. Wishing. Not anymore. I turned away from the doorway, from the weight of a past life pressing against my ribs. This time, I wasn't going to make the same mistake. This time, I let go.
