When restless spirits begin targeting her loved ones, a reluctant witch turns to her late mother's grimoire and awakens an ancient, charming spirit whose protection comes at a deadly cost, forcing her to untangle a family curse before it consumes them both.

                                                                    * * *

Olivia Dubois never wanted magic, and she definitely didn't want him.
For years, Olivia has shunned her late mother's craft and has been determined to ignore the spirits that stalk her every step, convinced they'd fade with time. But the dead don't simply fade away. And now, they've begun targeting the people she loves.
In desperation, Olivia turns to her mother's grimoire-only to awaken something far more dangerous than the ghosts she hoped to escape.
Caecus is ancient, dangerous, and far too charming for something that shouldn't exist. He offers her an enticing deal: peace and protection in exchange for a name. But some names, Olivia learns, are best forgotten.
The more time she spends learning from Caecus, the more entangled Olivia becomes in his games-drawn by his charisma, unnerved by his power, and tempted by the promise of freedom from the curse that has plagued her bloodline for centuries. But with every step she takes into the world of the occult, the barrier between the living and the dead wears thinner. Spirits grow restless. Secrets buried by her ancestors claw to the surface. And Olivia begins to suspect that Caecus's interest in her is not simply a coincidence.
With shadowy forces closing in and her own power awakening whether she likes it or not, Olivia must confront the truth: the magic she has always feared may be the only thing keeping her alive. To survive, she must decide how much of herself she is willing to give to her power, the past, and to the dangerous spirit who may be her ruin... or her only salvation.

For eons, the galaxy has lived in fear of the plague that is ravaging mankind without hope of survival. Then, with the alliance of an alien race, the Glacíens, and the scientific and biological enhancements they offered, Humans believed a cure was within reach. But over 75,000 years following the Alliance, the plague remains and grows ever more deadly. Illness is not the only dangerous force in the galaxy however, a reality that Malak is all too aware of despite the lost memories of his past. He has been serving as a hired mercenary for several years and remaining under the radar of the Eight Systems' Coalition, who he fears may know more about himself than even he does. After all, a man with a date tattooed on his wrist, abilities that should not be present in the absence of cybernetics, and no memory of his prior life would surely be of some interest to the ESC's scientists, and he has no intention of landing himself in one of their labs. But when his ship picks up an unusual distress signal from the planet where all plague victims have been quarantined, a simple choice will set him on a path he never saw coming. One that could lead him to the truth about himself, and that of the entire galaxy, or one that could lead to humanity's demise. 100 years ago, amidst WW3's nuclear bombing, a deadly virus was released in the atmosphere and nearly wiping out the humanity. It lives inside the human brain thriving on the empathy receptors, leading to irrational behaviour and ultimately brain death. To slow the damage, scientists created L.O.V.E, short for Living Off Vital Emotions, a nanovaccine that numbs the virus and switches off all strong emotions. As a last resort and with a dying planet, the Supreme Government created the City, a place to contain the infected survivors suitable for the experiment. Those in the first stages of illness became ideal candidates to receive the neuroinhibitor. Having their feelings restrained and their memory altered, those who come of age are designated a life partner through a Selection process, thus preserving the humankind. A few decades after the trial had started, scientists had a major breakthrough. The nanites, which are highly chemically reactive organisms, are changing their bio-engineered purpose when dopamine levels are high. With a new generation of nanoids, stronger and smarter to fight the battle, the virus doesn't have a chance. Many attempts were made to create a man-made version of synthetic dopamine and each time the outcome was a disaster. Their goal is to create new generations, immune to the virus. These are called Purebloods, the offsprings of those who find pure love, the only cure to save them from a violent death. Running out of time, the Experiment entered in its final stages. To minimize the threats, the Colonies have sent their best soldiers to oversee the trial and protect its key subjects. If only things were going according to plan, or better...stay hidden. With Iron Guard, the resistance outside the walls, hunting the Purebloods too, will the trial save human race before it's too late? #3 in #dystopianfuture (27.06.2020)
