Prince Ren is the youngest son of the brutal warlord Shao Kahn. Since birth, he has been enmeshed in the darkness of the Kahn's brutality. As a small boy, he was placed under the care of his older sisters- Princesses Kitana and Mileena. Under their tutelage, he was trained in the deadly arts of assassination and stealth in hopes of turning the young prince into a lethal agent of his father.
Despite this, Ren hides a core of compassion and kindness deep beneath his outward appearance as a skillful killer. In order to broker a continued alliance with the Shokan people the Kahn betrothed Ren to Prince Goro- adding additional pressure to Ren's internal struggle.
When Outworld makes its move to challenge Earth Realm in the Mortal Kombat tournament, Ren is ordered to accompany Prince Goro as he participates as Outworld's undisputed champion. During the tournament, Ren is exposed to Earth Realm's champions as well as Raiden- the protector of Earth. Recognizing that they share his own desires for peace, he makes the impulsive decision to ally himself with them in hopes of escaping the Kahn's pursuit of destruction.
