Along the way, she crosses paths with Antonio "Tru-Dat" Marshall, a seven-foot legend with a record-breaking streak and a sharp eye for survivors. He sees something in Daisy Jo she doesn't see in herself-something that reminds him of his niece, Arabella Van Pelt, a past competitor who made a name for herself in the Maze.
As Daisy Jo fights through insane life-or-death challenges-like unicycling above gator pits, escaping deranged circus animals, and facing flesh-stripping winged insects-she realizes that The Mice Maze isn't just about survival. Through this obligation alone, Charlotte feels like it is her responsibility to get Emmi back, to right her wrong. In helping Nate pursue his kidnapped daughter, Charlotte inadvertently allows herself to feel again, to care for those other than herself.
