In the depths of the Pacific Ocean, where sunlight barely penetrates and shadows dance like phantoms, there resides a creature unlike any that has ever been recorded. Alex Carter, a seasoned oceanographer, and his dedicated team are on a mission to unravel the mysteries of these dark waters. Though they approach their work with a scientific mindset, a flicker of curiosity ignites within Alex-a nagging desire to discover what truly lies beneath the surface.

Having plunged into the abyss twice already, he feels an inexplicable pull toward the unknown. The second descent was unlike anything he had experienced before. As he navigated through the eerie silence, illuminated only by the beam of his submersible's lights, he stumbled upon the remnants of a rusted ship, its hull encrusted with barnacles and time. It was a vessel swallowed by the ocean's depths, and within its decaying embrace lay a journal inside a wooden box, its pages yellowed and fragile.

The entries spoke of a person who had vanished without a trace, leaving behind only whispers of terror and the unknown. The ocean had a way of hiding its secrets, and he was determined to uncover them.

A 2019 Wattys entry deeply into climate change, global warming, and environmental destruction, especially the nuclear kind! A lot of true facts are embedded in this story which has both true and fictional characters. Who is to be believed is for you to decide. The chapters are many but many are short. Still, it is a full-sized novel with promise for future adventures. Plot: An international crew of scientists board a large state-of -the art oceanographic vessel privately funded by an anonymous source. The itinerary is to travel down the west coast of the Americas and travel the South Pacific to Antarctica. The team plans to visit many known sites of hydrothermal vents using a device called the MAPR, searching vents for a bacterium that seems promising in use as a way to fight carbon dioxide emissions. But one of the two junior scientists on the team soon realizes that secrets are being kept, and makes promises to keep some, while learning that some onboard have entirely different agendas. To complicate matters, this junior scientist's desire for a special friendship grows in intensity, just as mysterious murmurings and strange sightings intensify. And then, the ship experiences a sequence of events that will draw world attention and leave all of us with more questions than answers. "If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water." Cass has no memories of her parents, only impossible dreams of waves and orcas and, sometimes, her mother's voice. When she and her adopted aunt return to the Pacific Northwest island--where her parents died twelve years before--Cass hopes the place will trigger long-buried memories. Instead, she discovers that the impossible is real, and that history is about to repeat itself. Unless she can stop it. ***Teaser*** The water hit with such a shock of cold that Cass thought she was going to pedal up and out of it again like some cartoon character. Instead, she flailed and splashed and smashed one arm against a piling as salt water poured into her raincoat & filled her shoes. "How do you like it?" Jason yelled. She spun until she could make out his form, black against gray sky. "What?" she sputtered. She dragged one arm from the water long enough to shove wet hair from her face. Jason became clearer: black hair dark above his yellow raincoat, arms crossed over his chest. "What the hell are you talking about?" "I asked how you like it, going for a swim in this water." She was open-mouthed with disbelief. It was a bad idea; a surge lifted her and slapped salt water into her mouth. Bile burned her throat as she coughed and all the while she was still flailing at the water, fighting the drag of shoes and clothes to keep afloat. She should kick them off-that's what you were supposed to do if you fell into the ocean with your clothes on-but she was only a dozen feet from the dock. Besides, it was her only coat. Jason watched her the way she'd watch a barracuda. "I know you're following me." "Following you?" What. The. Hell. She gave a mighty kick and tossed her coat onto the dock. Jason just stood there. "I nearly drowned last week, you know that? Now you show up as if nothing happened." "Last week," Cass said slowly, "I was in Argentina." Whatever he'd seen, it wasn't her.
