Kayte Knox has lived in San Diego, California all of her life. She never planned on moving, and she never thought her family would get torn apart. She was happy living in a condo during the school year, and a beach house during the summer. She was happy having her mother and her father and her little brother.
But her world got torn apart in January of 2014.
And her world fell out of the sky in April of 2015.
Her mother was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, and sixteen months later passed away.
In an attempt to run away from his problems, Kayte's dad, Marcus, moves across the country to Cleveland, Ohio. In another attempt to solve his problems, Marcus turns into a drug and alcohol addict. And, eventually, starts to abuse Kayte and her little brother Kyle.
Kyle isn't sure what happened to his mother, but he knows that she is gone, and will never be coming back. The only thing that Kyle has to remind him of his mother is a picture, and a story only Kayte knows how to tell.

She knew that her twin brother Casey got into trouble outside of school, but she didn't know that he was getting into "Lukas Hasten" kind of trouble. And until Christmas break, the name Lukas Hasten meant nothing to her. Boy, those were the days. ******* Dev Asters is used to flying to Garber, Michigan every year for Christmas break. She's used to how her parents leave her and her brother behind to go on luxurious vacations. And she's used to spending most of her time with her aunt and uncle when her brother runs away with his friends. But the one thing that she isn't used to is having her routine, no matter how boring, interrupted. So when her parents tell her that they're moving to Garber in the summer, her world is turned upside down. Things seemingly can't get any worse. That is, until the day she meets Casey's friends. They agree to go to an abandoned house in the woods. But when they get there, they find something unthinkable. There's a dead body in the forest, and no one seems to know what happened or how it got there.
