1959. Halloway Toys had become a national sensation, filling store shelves with lifelike dolls, teddy bears, and automaton playthings that felt eerily real. Children adored them. Parents marveled at their craftsmanship. The factory, located in a massive warehouse in the heart of Chicago, employed hundreds of workers.
But beneath its gleaming facade, new "toys" were being made-not from plastics and fabrics, but from people. Their muffled screams never to reach the surface.
