Fred shrugs. "Watching someone you care about come frighteningly close to not getting back up again tends to rearrange your priorities."

I glance back at him then-and something in his expression softens, like he's relieved I'm still here, still talking, still breathing.

"And just for the record," he adds, tone easy, almost offhand, though his eyes are anything but, "if a Dementor so much as drifts in your direction again, I'll personally see it launched into the lake."

I can't stop the small laugh that escapes me. "You really think you can single-handedly protect me from every dangerous thing in the world?"

"I'd bloody well try."

I lift my eyes to his, properly this time. It's only then that I realise how close he is-how his whole focus is fixed entirely on me like nothing else in the room matters. And something aches in my chest-sharp and soft all at once. The kind of ache that reminds you you're alive. That you've survived worse. That maybe you're allowed moments like this.
