I wrote this for my Black Atlantic art history class. If you don't know what the Black Atlantic is, it's a term used to reference the exchange of cultures across the middle passage while African people were being trafficked across. I was tasked to write a new artist statement for a work in the current exhibition "Project a Black Planet" at the Art Institute of Chicago and to connect it back to the Black Atlantic.
I decided to post this so more people can know about the work, my personal opinions of it, and to give a free educational resource. The last page will be a link to the museum it is in and links to the other sites where other people have discussed the work.
CONTENT WARNING for mentions of human trafficking and racial violence. None of it is explicit, and is only briefly referenced.
