The is a flash fiction piece I wrote for the 2010 New England Crime Bake Conference when Charlaine Harris was the guest of honor. We were challenged to write a piece that was under 150 words and included at least 10 words from the titles of her book. Bones was one of the words.

Frankie Riley was the youngest of three. She was sweet, smart, kind and beautiful, making her older siblings a bit jealous of her and all of the achievements she had. She was only one year behind her sister, Tatum, making her a Sophomore at Woodsboro High. Her life seemed perfect. She was on a fast track to a good college, she had great friends and a good relationship with her sister, she was dating one of the star football players. Life felt like a dream, until it turned into a nightmare. When things get turned upside down for her, Frankie's mentality begins to snap. She can see her perfect life dissolving in front of her eyes, and she can't figure out how to take back control. She feels like she's spiraling, and her sister's new boyfriend, Stu Macher, seems to be the only one taking notice. When Billy and Stu pay a visit to Casey Beckers house in masks, they get the shock of a lifetime. Their perfect plan is being intercepted by a wildflower, one they thought wouldn't ever dream of doing something like this. They're angry about it, but most of all, impressed and now, even more obsessed than they had been before. But let's rewind. Certain pieces of this puzzle need to be explained first. Five Foes, A Murder & Lies
Margo Watson was found murdered in her own home on October 13th. Leaving the town of Scattervale, with the solving of it's first murder mystery, in 30 years. Her body was found in her bathroom tub with evidence of a homicide, that led to her death. Once the autopsy came back with fingerprints from her friends, covered on her corpse, the mystery unravels. As each side of the story gets told from different perspectives. Only which side is the truth? And which is a lie? But that's not all, Margo's soul could not rest until she could remember who killed her. Forcing her to haunt her five friends who brought pain upon her, mentally and physically. In several different ways, since she moved here. Only to find out the truth, about what happened to her, that gruesome night. With her memories in shambles and even questioning her friendships. Margo wanted nothing more, than to get to the bottom of her own murder mystery, so she could move on & find peace. But when her foes as friends argue to be framed for the murder and not actual suspects. Things start to get bloody, as the town of Scattervale, point fingers, pick sides, and bid on the killer. So which one of her five foes did murder her in cold blood? And will anyone ever know the truth? There's only one way to find out.... Aiden is a good man though; he continued his father's work cleaning up the streets and getting rid of the ungodly." " The young woman couldn't have been more than twenty and she was in terrible condition; her skin was bruised so bad it almost looked black and her face was swollen and had cuts all over. Her ripped clothes were covered in dry and fresh blood so we knew it was worse underneath. Her words trembled and crackled but they were clear: 'help me, I'm being tortured.'"
