Madeline and Malcolm develop a rivalry at Harvard and, over time, Madeline has to leave after getting her master's degree in applied mathematics so Madeline can become an actuary. As she strives to be an actuary, her mind is constantly battered by ill-fated external events and gets a case of schizophrenia, then eventually psychosis and depression. After Harvard, it grows into an increasingly more troubling task for Madeline to discern fantasy from reality.
