Why now? She has forsworn her magical skills years ago, and never looked back. As an editor, she definitely has no use for a familiar, at least of all a bat. But when her new job turns out to be more sinister than she expected and she has to decide whom to trust in an increasingly alien world, turning to a familiar might not be the worst option.

Sawyer is among the most powerful of all the kids at the place. The leader, who is also her abusive, selfish father, sends her to a city to seek this mysterious source of magic that he has been trying to find for years. He claims he's tried to seek it himself in the same city, but has never found it. While Sawyer is trying to find it, instead, she finds Eli. Eli and Sawyer tell a lot about themselves to each other. Sawyer then finds out, there's a lot more to Eli than she thought when she discovers his psychic abilities... she is extremely tempted to do multiple risks that she's never thought she'd be able to do.
