After Korra and her allies defeated Kuvira, the once-mighty Earth Kingdom crumbled into chaos. With no central authority, the land fractured into warring states, each controlled by former Kuvira generals, warlords, or self-proclaimed monarchs vying for dominance. Among these factions, the National Earth Empire emerged as the most powerful, controlling nearly 35% of the former Earth Kingdom's territory.

One day, in the town of Gaoling, an anomaly shocked the region-a massive, glowing portal materialized in the heart of the settlement. Scouts from Ba Sing Se City, upon investigating, discovered that the Gate led to a grand foreign city, its skyline dominated by an ancient palace square, later identified as Kathmandu Durbar Square.

News of the discovery reached Emperor Guan of the National Earth Empire who saw the Gate as an opportunity to expand his dominion beyond the war-torn Earth Kingdom. Without hesitation, he commanded his armies to prepare for an invasion, determined to claim the mysterious land on the other side of the Gate.
