The Celesians, the twelve gods ruling the four countries of the world, watch over humankind from their unseen throne atop Mount Celesia. Beyond the borders of civilization lies a wasteland teeming with monsters, a place no one dares to venture. The heroes, mortal children of the gods, train on the floating island of Avis to protect humanity. From age five, they attend the Celesia School for the Demigods. At eighteen, they must choose: remain on the island or leave to face the world below.

Theia, a freshman in high school, is no hero. She is a snow --- marked by a condition that makes people believe she is descended from half-bloods --- an outsider in a town where everyone else looks normal. Adopted at eleven, she has spent her life trying to blend in.

When a horde of monsters attacks a classmate's house party, leaving eighteen dead, their nation demands justice: the half-blood who saved the survivors must be taken into custody. He is not a hero, they say, if he has innocent blood on his hands. Were he only not involved in the massacre that killed over a hundred people seven years ago, the recent tragedy could have been just another regrettable misfortune.

But the heroes of Avis will not tolerate such disrespect, and their wrath could plunge the world into chaos. As tensions rise, Theia discovers her own fate may be tied to the unfolding disaster --- and her choices, no matter how small, may determine the future of gods and mortals alike.
