Faun has always been on the sidelines-the backburner, the afterthought, the one who never gets chosen. He's fine with it. At least, that's what he tells himself. But then there's Aden-charming, kind, and just out of reach. What starts as casual teasing and reluctant friendship turns into something dangerous-late-night conversations, stolen glances, and gestures that feel too much like something, yet never quite enough. Faun knows better than to fall. Aden isn't his to have. But the problem with being a backburner? You get just enough warmth to keep hoping, even when you know you'll never be the flame. A story of mixed signals, quiet heartbreak, and the pain of always being second.

19 year old Asher is excited to start his summer vacation at the beach with his friends. Away from the stress of college. Close to the beach he is in a terrible accident. Asher wakes up in the hospital, disoriented. His mother tells him that the driver of the car that drove into his lane had a heart attack, causing his motorcycle to veer off the road. He's upset but tries to keep his spirit high. While recovering he comes across another patient named Kale. Kale is quiet at first but opens up to Asher. When they get closer, he reveals to Asher why he is a long term patient at the hospital. Asher takes it upon himself to bring more sunshine into Kale's life and over time they naturally got closer...maybe a little too close. They both feel it, but neither of them name it, both scared. One day Kale tells Asher that his mother decided to move to a different city. The treatment seemed better, she told him. "Will I see you again?" Asher asks hopeful. "Maybe not in this lifetime, but I hope in the next. You pinky promised to show me the ocean after all. And pinky promises are always kept." Kale replies with a sad smile. And that's how Asher's summer love came to an end. Or is it?
