Kusuo Saiki, after a typical day at school, stumbles upon a mute, six-year-old girl named Kazumi standing alone. Despite his reluctance, Saiki brings her home, where his mother, Kurumi, immediately begins to spoil and care for the child. Kurumi suggests adopting Kazumi, and though Saiki refuses, she uses his weakness-coffee jelly-to sway him. Eventually, Kurumi names the girl Kazumi, and as the night unfolds, Saiki reluctantly stays by her side, uncomfortable with the new "little sister" but sensing a shift in his life. Despite his protests, he begins to feel a quiet bond with Kazumi.
"Maybe this whole big brother thing isn't so bad after all,"-Saiki
