Spencer Reid va sur ses 30 ans, il pense encore à la femme qu'il avait aimer il y a 10 ans, Emeraude Richards, il en avait 20 et elle en avait 18, et il aime encore maintenant, leurs chemin ce sont séparés lorsqu'elle à du retourner à Londres car son père était mourant et depuis il ne se sont jamais revus, non pas qu'il n'as pas essayer de la retrouver mais il n'a jamais pu trouver ne serait-ce que son numéro pour la contacté, il aurai pu demandé à Garcia de la retrouver pour lui mais il ne voulais pas que ses amis se mêle de ça.
Lors d'une enquête à Los Angeles il va la retrouver par hasard, elle est anthropologue judiciaire de la police et c'est elle qui se charge des autopsies.
Avant que Spencer ne retourne à Washington, il passa la nuit avec Emeraude et l'un comme l'autre pensait que ça serait la dernière fois qu'ils se reverrait mais aucun des deux n'avait prévu une tel chose qui pousse alors Emeraude à accepter le poste de directrice du département d'anthropologie du Jeffersonian qui travail en collaboration avec le FBI.

The BAU team gets called to Elroy, Wisconsin to investigate murders of five young people, three women and two men in their twenties, having nothing but their appereance in common. The thing disturbing to most of the team is the fact all the victims look similiar to someone they know. Hotch orders Reid to stay at the station because he's worried about te doctor. The unsub is one of the most difficult ones the team had to deal with so far, so after the team, excluding the young doctor, and most of the officers leave to arrest possible suspect, they find it was a fake call, they come back to devasted place, the officers that stayed behind all lying on the floor, not remembering anything that has happened since their colegues left, and of course everyone's worst fear came true, the unsub got Reid. Later two other bodies are found, one female and one male, neither of them being able to get identified, until the unsub is caught, when getting asked about the FBI agent's wherabouts only replies with "Thought you would find him by now" while having satisfied smirk on his face. No one can tell wheter the unsub is bluffing or not, and as much as the team wishes he was, while discovering the unsub's hideout they find some of his victims alive, their worst fear being confirmed.
