Nene and Rui are childhood friends, they're really close since they are neighbours. But one day, when Rui, Nene and their moms were going out, a car crashed on to the sidewalk and hit Rui's mom. It was initially going to hit Rui and Nene, but Rui's mom sacrificed herself for them. Nene's mom was best friends with her. Devestated, she became addicted to dr!gs and neglected Nene ever since.
Meanwhile Rui, his dad lost the love of his life, and dived himself to his work, leaving Rui alone at home with Nene most of the time.
Although they're both neglected, it affected them differently. Nene became a people pleaser and she often faked smiles (sort of like Mafuyu) because she had to take care of her often drunk mom. Rui became a quiet loner, he never talked to anyone other than Nene and Tsukasa at school, which caused him to be bullied by his classmates. His intelligence added to his bullying, he often made experiments and robots by himself, often asking Nene or Tsukasa to test it out, but it sometimes fails. He's seen as a weird guy, which made his depression worse over the years.
Both of them passed middle school and now go to Kamiyama High, where they began to see each other's trauma effects. Nene had always been in love with Rui, but Rui couldn't feel love anymore since his mom's passing. Nene was determined to help him recover, to let him feel her love. But Rui doubted himself, almost abusing Nene for trying to help him. Nene never gave up and kept helping him.
