The end of the word was depicted in many ways. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes or tsunami's that would wreck havoc and wipe the earth clean of how we know it. Maybe you believed that we would go out like the dinosaurs and a giant meteor hurling through space would level the Earth turning the surface inside out. Truly gruesome fantasies but this never stopped people from thinking about them.
