Soleil Clarke, an American socialite born in 1895, found herself trapped in an unwanted engagement to Graeme Doughty, a wealthy but controlling man, after her parents' divorce left her and her mother in financial ruin. On a voyage to America for their wedding, Soleil, already struggling with despair, discovered that Graeme was not human but a vampire.
After resisting his control, Graeme attacked her in a fit of rage, accidentally impaling her with broken wood. To save her, he turned her into a vampire. Fearing the consequences of her transformation on the ship, he took her to Pennsylvania, where she endured a painful transition. Soleil, lacking abilities of her own, was powerless against Graeme's acid-like touch and remained under his control until another captive, Jocelyn, awakened. Together, they overpowered and killed Graeme.
Soleil and Jocelyn became inseparable, but Jocelyn's recklessness led to her exposure and execution by the Volturi. Left alone for the first time, Soleil fled aimlessly, eventually finding refuge in Sitka, Alaska, where she discovered the existence of vegetarian vampires-an alternative she never knew was possible.
