Freddie Gilbert was born into the wrong body. He still thought about the way his parents once told him he was, 'going through a phase' and that he'd grow out of his insistence that he was, in fact, their son and not the daughter. But ultimately, they came to accept him for who he was and when they died, he felt like a piece of them had been taken with them. He thought the grief might consume him and that's how he ended up fleeing Mystic Falls, resulting in a two week bender in the engaging city of New York, until his aunt forced his return and he had no choice but to adjust to life without his mother and father. Only life in Mystic Falls was about to get a whole lot harder, and as a trans boy in high school, Freddie didn't even know that was possible.
