Lillian Walker is 17, clueless about men, and only knows about life on the ranch. Jesse Colter, 26, is a rugged cowboy who's spent too many years on the road-alone, restless, and without a woman's warmth. Her father offers him a job for bed and food, bringing him under their roof-with strict rules and watchful eyes. What will happen as they work on the ranch, side by side? _ Lillian Walker has lived her whole life on the ranch-isolated, routine, untouched by the world beyond the fence line. Out here, there are no men her age, no grand love stories, no stolen glances across candlelit dinners. Just dust, sweat, and the weight of knowing this is all she'll ever have. Until Jesse Colter rides in. Rugged. Mysterious. Too damn handsome for his own good. A drifter with nowhere to go and secrets he won't share, looking for work in exchange for a bed and food. Her father agrees. Now, Jesse will be sleeping just down the hall. Working under the same scorching sun. Eating at the same table. And Lillian? She's never been more curious about a man in her life.

"I wanted you Lily Rose. You were all I ever wanted. You were the girl I loved." Wanted, loved. Past tense, in the past. No more. He didn't love her anymore. It had hurt her. He had hurt her. Just like she had hurt him by denying her love for him. "I'm sorry, Daniel," she whispered as he began to wrap his arms around her. It gave her no comfort. No peace. Suddenly she realized, that all the good things that she had gone through, all the happiness and sunshine was false. False hope because in the end no matter how hard she tried, the fate in store for her sister wouldn't be stopped by the hope that maybe tomorrow would be a better day. Deep down she loved him. Whether he still loved her or not she loved him. Looking up at him with sad eyes she said, "I could never hate you." He offered a smile that didn't reach his eyes, "Good," he offered, "because I don't think I can be your punching bag again." She smiled up at him before she wrapped her arms around him and they held each other for a long time. Lily Gilbert is small town girl from Idaho. She's bright, caring, and loyal to a fault.
