"Turning my head toward the door, my breath hitched.

Him.

He hadn't changed out of the white shirt, his sleeves still pushed up, the gun a dark, lethal weight at his hip. His sharp eyes cut through the room, tracking across the floor until they landed on me. Somewhere in that dark gaze, I caught a fleeting glimpse of concern before he stepped forward.

I couldn't look away. I memorized the rhythm of his stride, fighting a losing battle to hide my weakness. Just being in the same room as him evoked a terrifying, frantic panic that clawed at my chest.

He knelt on one knee, casting a long shadow over the silk of my lehenga.

"Khaana kyun nahi khaya? [Why didn't you eat?]"

His tone was quiet, soft enough to sound intimate, but the command behind it was absolute. He expected an answer.

The absurdity of the question made my jaw tight. The hypocrisy was sickening. Did he honestly not realize what he had put me through? My fingers curled into tight fists against the floor. But the anger was useless, and we both knew it.

I remained silent, crushed by the reminder of how powerless I truly was."
