Seventeen-year-old, confident Zach Taylor was born and raised in poverty in the small town of Maryfield, Oregon. As the bank is about to foreclose on his mother's home, he hatches a plan to get funding for a Memory Insertion company that his father tried to start before he died.
Zach's friend Jason sneaks him into a secret event called the Masked Investor, held at an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of town. But something is off that night. First, a brown-masked investor says the word "human" like it's an insult. Then, Zach finds Jason having a whispered discussion in a conservatory "off-limits" to guests. He thinks the strangeness of the night is over when he arrives home, but Jason texts him a dropped pin-along with three of his friends-asking to meet on the same gravel road as the Masked Investor.
By the time Zach arrives... Jason's car is at the bottom of a cliff.
That's when Sarah puts her head on Zach's shoulder.
