Hazel Kennedy has never had an easy life. She was bullied in her high school years because she wears both summer dresses and band tees and listens to "emo" music. The bullying has left her damaged, even though she's a thousand miles away in sunny California and proved everyone wrong with her UCSF acceptance letter. The only solace she finds is when she's asleep, writing, or curled up in bed. Eating disorder voices still speak to her, and sometimes she'll sit in front of a razor blade or a bottle of pills for hours, contemplating her own life. She has scars on her wrists and thighs that remind her she's meaningless.
Every attempt at love has seemed to fail for her. She had a long-standing crush on her childhood best friend, a successful, gorgeous rock singer named Andy Biersack. She craved for a real love with Andy for years, but he dropped school and moved to Los Angeles during their junior year. She was left more broken and battered internally by his words than the hits she took in high school. She knows that she would remember him if they met again, but believes he wouldn't remember her. Besides, why would such a famous, successful man ever want such a fucked up girl like her?
Every time Every time Andy saw Hazel, his heart fluttered and he couldn't stop smiling, she was so beautiful. He didn't want to leave Ohio without her, but he was only a junior, and a one way ticket to Los Angeles would be his chance at fame. Now he has everything he's ever wanted, except for Hazel. He still craves to tell her how sorry he is for leaving her, he wants to love her pain away. Andy's afraid that the same fire in her angry eyes when he told her he was leaving is still there, that he's scarred her too much to ever be able to love her like he wants to.
Andy hasn't spoken to Hazel in years, and has no idea where she goes to college, or even if she is still alive. All Andy wants to do is find her and love her, and make her feel meaningful, important, like she belongs.
"Are you mad? Do you want to die?" he snapped.
I just stood there, staring at him. He was tall, dressed well, and looked annoyed.
"Hey! Are you deaf? Say something!" he said again, this time stepping closer.
"Why did you stop?" I finally whispered, my voice shaking. " Why didn't you kill me? I don't want to live..." My words broke into
sob.
"Why would you say that? Why do you want to die?" he asked.
