Set in Naples in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Goncharov is said to star Robert De Niro as protagonist Lo Straniero/Goncharov, a Russian hitman and former nightclub manager. The narrative includes a love triangle involving Goncharov, his wife Katya (Cybill Shepherd), and his enemy Andrey (Harvey Keitel), whose relationship with Goncharov is described as having homoerotic overtones. Katya similarly has an affair with Sofia (Sophia Loren);both Goncharov/Andrey and Katya/Sofia are popular ships within Goncharov's fandom. Another prominent character is Joseph "Ice Pick Joe" Morelli (John Cazale), an ostensibly psychopathic assassin known for using ice picks, whose subplot in Goncharov is said to feature themes of mental illness and childhood trauma. The film apparently features a recurring motif of clocks. One version of the plot outlined by The Washington Post ends with Goncharov betrayed and murdered, as well as the deaths of most of the other characters.

The Assassin's Story is a contemporary thriller about a professional killer's flight from his past and the dangers he and his wife go through when his secrets come to light. Alex Nikitin was a professional hit man in the family business run by his Uncle Vanya until his jealous cousin Vladimir provided information about who really killed his parents. He successfully blackmailed his uncle in order to leave the family business. Alex is convinced he should never kill again if he wants redemption. While trying to create a life away from his family, Alex meets a lonely bookshop owner named Sophia in a small town in rural Pennsylvania. They fall in love and Alex decides to put down roots. One night he enters their store to find his wife trussed up on a table and his former partner searching for the blackmail that had kept Uncle Vanya at bay. Alex and Sophia are forced to flee pursuing thugs. Sophia learns about Alex's hidden past as well as his promise to never kill again which proves problematic as they are relentlessly pursued. As Alex holds true to his new principles and still won't kill, Sophia must decide if she can pick up the mantle Alex has cast aside to save their lives.
