- CARMINE, CRIMSON, SCARLET AND sanguine. The color red had always been Vada Feng's personal good luck charm. Every game, she'd rub the slightest smear of her favorite shade of lipstick along her left inner wrist. She didn't know when it started; it had just evolved from the red marker she'd used in Little League all those years ago. Vada wasn't one to break tradition until she was.

In the winning game, the one that decided they were going to Nationals, her tube of lipstick was nowhere to be found. Despite the wrongness she felt due to the missing part of her routine, she disregarded it. She'd disregarded it, and it hadn't mattered in the end. Her team had persevered, and they were going to Nationals.

Well, they were going to Nationals until the crash happened.

Vada Feng's life was forever changed in the blink of an eye. She had no say in what happened, no choice to opt out, or she'd surely die; Vada was stranded. They all were. Six dead. Just like that.

One split second was all it took.

As Vada peeled herself from the devastating wreckage, she felt a sudden pang of pain and looked down at her wrist. It was red, not with the familiar sheen of gloss but the color of a darker wine red, the slightest slash in her wrist as her lifeblood trickled down her arm towards her hand.

They weren't playing Soccer anymore, but mother nature's cruel invention of her own vicious sport: Survival.

Vada and her team are tested in every way as they deal with the horrific deaths of their own, the most brutal of winters, and the ever-growing and seemingly impossible challenge of staying alive.

Vada's intensive morals gradually alienate her from the group of girls she once considered her closest friends as they sink deeper and deeper into something she cannot recognize.
