The Boneflowers bloom once every thousand years. When they take root, a city dies.

"It does not dream, for it has never woken."

The Sleeper is not a god.
The Sleeper is not a machine.
The Sleeper is not one thing, but many.
It is other, yet it is same.

The last of humanity clings to existence on Khepri, a world long past its prime. Once a thriving bastion of art, science, and philosophy, it is now a graveyard city built upon the bones of its own dead. The sky is red with dust, the air thick with decay, and the Boneflower Trees stand at the city's heart, their roots sinking deep into the ruins.

No one knows where they came from.

Only that every thousand years, one person is chosen-sealed beneath the roots of the Boneflower, sacrificed so that the city may endure.

But the Boneflowers are more than just a ritual. They are a cycle. A mechanism that devours the living to sustain the dead. The city above does not thrive. It does not endure. It is a corpse being fed.

And now, so are you.

Seventy-four years has been long enough. The way of the infamous Hunger Games has been altered. No longer is every Gamemaker out to devise the worst means of torture and death for every tribute. No longer are the people of Panem outwardly tolerant of President Snow's murderous actions. Under the facade of a normal group of Gamemakers, several rebellious citizens have begun an experiment which, if it succeeds, will make use of technology both to rescue the tributes before they are dead and then deposit the brainwashed children back in time. They have to try it. No one knows what horrors future Hunger Games may bring, and the desperate rebels are willing to try anything. Meanwhile, in the mountainous regions of District 2, Cato Hadley and Clove Kentwell have trained their whole lives for the Games. Nevertheless, their ambitions change when they, without meaning to, find themselves in the Games together. They are both determined to win. But if they don't, what will happen to them? The brainwashed tributes who land in New York City know nothing of who they are or where they are from. They do not remember Panem, or the Games, or even their own names. This is a science fiction story based off the Hunger Games and its characters. Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Hunger Games! This story is based around a plot twist I created, but all rights go to Suzanne Collins, the author of the original series. Disclaimer no. 2: this was a first draft written by a very awkward fifteen-year-old me; please treat it as such. Eighteen-year-old cadet Lara Lorensky has one goal: to win the Selection, the only way people on Earth can ascend to NovaTopia, a utopia-like space shuttle orbiting the planet. Unfortunately, her longtime rival, Morgan SΓ‘nchez, also has the same goal--and their almost undefeated record in practices is Lara's biggest obstacle to victory. When an unexpected terrorist attack destroys Morgan's cyber arm, Lara's chances to win are significantly increased. But... what is the point of winning if her rival is not in their top condition? Plagued by guilt and a feeling she does not quite understand yet, Lara decides to help Morgan find a cyberlimb mechanic. As she ventures outside her sheltered bubble, Lara realizes that everything she was taught was a lie, including her identity. Perhaps the utopia she was fighting for all her life was also an illusion. Together, Lara and Morgan have a new goal: to find out the truth of Lara's identity--and the truth behind NovaTopia. {Part I COMPLETED!
