Elena McCall is an average teenager suffering from asthma and living with her single mother in Beacon Hills. One night, Elena and her best friend, Stiles Stilinski, the son of the local sheriff, Noah Stilinski, learn about half a corpse found by police in the woods.

The two set out to find the other half, but Elena is attacked and bitten by a werewolf. With her newfound lycanthropy, Elena gains supernatural abilities such as enhanced strength, speed and heightened senses, enabling her to excel as the captain of her Beacon Hills High School lacrosse team.

Elena gains respect from popular girl, Lydia Martin and the envy of her lacrosse-playing boyfriend, Jackson Whittemore. Elena also develops a romantic relationship with school newcomer Allison Argent; however, Elena soon discovers Allison's father, Chris Argent, is a Werewolf Hunter.

Elena and Stiles meet Beta Werewolf Derek Hale, whose family perished in a mysterious house fire six years ago. They uncover the second half of the missing corpse and discover it is Derek's sister, Laura Hale. Elena also learns the Alpha Werewolf, the most powerful of all wolves, is on a murdering spree and was responsible for biting her.

Realising the consequences and changes of her new life, she is forced to protect her peers and loved ones, who struggles to find her place in the new world, torn between a Werewolf and a Human love...
