There are some things I knew for certain.
Scatter salt at the threshold to keep unwanted spirits at bay. Keep rosemary by the garden gate- not just for protection, but for memory. Plant lavender for luck, never whistle at night unless you want something to whistle back and above all else- never fall in love with the dead.
