Winnie was never meant to be more than a shadow.

Raised as the lady-in-waiting to Princess Fiona-the crowned heir of the spirit-bound queendom of Gansenmag-Winnie's life has always been one of quiet service. But beneath the robes and rituals lies a secret: the power that grants the royal line its divine right to rule does not flow through Fiona.

It flows through Winnie.

As a child, Winnie was given a taste of the sacred elixir meant only for the heir. Since then, the spirits have whispered in dreams, in visions, in flickers of forgotten lives. When Fiona's connection to the spirits fails to awaken, the court grows restless. To prevent political collapse, Fiona is sent abroad under the guise of a diplomatic journey-one that could end in a marriage alliance. Winnie is sent with her.

And when the time comes, Winnie is told to take her place.
