Dalta has always been an outsider. Shunned by his kind and suffocated by the crushing loneliness of the deep, he refuses to accept a life of isolation. Stubborn and defiant, he breaks from the currents of his past and ventures to the surface, desperate to carve out a place for himself. But the world above is just as unwelcoming-until he crosses paths with Captain Sawyer, an aloof and unconventional pirate. Sawyer doesn't rescue Dalta, he claims him. The captain sees opportunity where others see superstition, and despite Dalta's resistance, he finds himself tangled in the unpredictable life of The Black Hydra's crew. They clash from the start, Sawyer is infuriatingly detached, while Dalta refuses to be treated as a mere curiosity. Yet, through battles at sea, daring heists, and drunken brawls in lawless ports, an uneasy alliance forms. But trouble brews beneath the waves. Word of a rogue merfolk traveling with a pirate spreads, drawing the attention of those who once cast Dalta out. When vengeful merfolk hunters and ruthless naval forces set their sights on The Black Hydra, Dalta is faced with an impossible choice: sever the only bond he's ever known to save himself or fight for a place among the outcasts who might just be his true family. As storms rage and old ghosts resurface, one thing becomes clear, Dalta is done running. If he's to claim a place in this world, he'll do it on his own terms.

(TW: self-harm) (Underwater Murder Series spin-off; Book 7 in the Family Ties Series) Since the death of his youngest sister (and his last living connection to his birth family), Drew Mercer has been trying to pick up the pieces of his grieving family. Ani has been his rock: always being there to listen and able to comfort him when he jerks awake in the middle of the night from nightmares of Faye's death. They have both settled into somewhat of a routine: after school and work, they go to the Bronze Mermaid and have dinner, sometimes just the two of them, or sometimes with his parents. After one such dinner, they're heading back to the palace when a merman dressed all in black appears, handing Drew a note. Before either he or Ani can respond, the merman is gone. Written on the note are only eight sentences, each more bone-chilling than the former: 'I know what your family was. And I know what you are, Drew Ryan Mercer. The son of a murderer. I am the only one with this information, but I can do much damage with it if prompted. Imagine what would happen if Ani were to find out. She would leave you. And you would be all alone. Just as you should have been all along.' Will Drew figure out who is behind the threatening and cryptic note before it's too late? Read to find out.
