"You're going to let him kill me?" My eyes water as I gasp for breath, overwhelmed by this new insight.

"What-no!" He jerks back in alarm. "We simply give them someone that they can..." He bites his lip, an odd gesture for such a huge man. "Micromanage, if you will. That way they pay less attention to the pack, and they become less...protective because of it. At least to the pack. Not so much the pup."

I breathe slowly trying to calm my beating heart. "And you want me to be that person?"

"Yes."
