'Uncertainty writhes in the pit of my stomach. "Jacob," I stifle a sob, "if you see me as a coward; a child, then why me? Why would you choose me, out of everyone? I mean, I'm not pretty. Everyone basically has it in the bag-" Jacob begins, cutting me off, "You are a seeker, Mickenna. You acknowledge the courage it takes to be yourself in a world that tells you, every single day, to be someone else." I feel the warmth enter my cheeks. I sure hope it isn't noticeable. He continues, "I admire you for that. And so what, your not pretty," that hits me a little too hard, "but that is only because you're beautiful. If anyone dares to modify you, they will destroy a one of a kind, and-" Oh. I get it now. I know what to do. I see his body tensing. I put my hand on his shoulder. It tenses even more. I trail my hand down his arm and fit mine in his. His body relaxes. He stares at our hands, as if he doesn't know what to do next. Maybe he doesn't. With my free hand, I tilt his chin up, to where he looks at me, and he does. His fierce green eyes blocking out the rest of the world. He leans in and fits his mouth to mine.' "We're all test subjects," Reese answered. "We were able to escape the system after receiving the cure though. All of us ended up with memory-erasing abilities which is one of the very few abilities that allows you to get out unnoticed." I blinked. Memory erasing? What the heck was she talking about? "Back up a second," I tried to keep my tone even and not let on to the whirlwind of emotions flaring up inside me. "How did you end up with magical abilities?" "They aren't magic dumbass," Micaiah scorned. "The whole reason they created the disease was survival of the fittest, as Skye mentioned. They're purposefully making the weak minorities sick to kill them off while they take the strongest young men and women to 'test' on, when really, they're just purposefully giving us the disease and then the cure. The cure is meant to 'over cure' us so to speak, as in make us stronger than we were before. We each end up with something slightly different." ☁ With Eli dead, it's back to the four of them. They set out to find the camp he'd mentioned, but they could have never imagined what it actually was. They've discovered national secrets that could kill them. With the help of another group of four ragged teenagers, they have to find a way to complete the impossible task of freeing the camp without losing their heads in the process. Follow each of them as they discover who they are, who they love, and more of their country's secrets than they could ever dream of in a thrilling trilogy told from all five points of view.
