'Uncertainty writhes in the pit of my stomach. "Jacob," I stifle a sob, "if you see me as a coward; a child, then why me? Why would you choose me, out of everyone? I mean, I'm not pretty. Everyone basically has it in the bag-" Jacob begins, cutting me off, "You are a seeker, Mickenna. You acknowledge the courage it takes to be yourself in a world that tells you, every single day, to be someone else." I feel the warmth enter my cheeks. I sure hope it isn't noticeable. He continues, "I admire you for that. And so what, your not pretty," that hits me a little too hard, "but that is only because you're beautiful. If anyone dares to modify you, they will destroy a one of a kind, and-" Oh. I get it now. I know what to do. I see his body tensing. I put my hand on his shoulder. It tenses even more. I trail my hand down his arm and fit mine in his. His body relaxes. He stares at our hands, as if he doesn't know what to do next. Maybe he doesn't. With my free hand, I tilt his chin up, to where he looks at me, and he does. His fierce green eyes blocking out the rest of the world. He leans in and fits his mouth to mine.'
