Mature
Vylus Eldryn, having just turned eighteen on the fifth day of Nythir, one of the coldest winter months, finally receives a do-over. He is to undergo the Rite of the Marked Arc for the third time after failing the past two trials. In his village of Yloria, a place built high in the treetops, citizens mark their passage into adulthood with this long-standing ancient ritual.

Led by his rough-around-the-edges mentor and close ally, Erik Willow ─ the one who has spent years honing his own craft in order to teach his pupils ─ Vylus tests his mettle against the Path of the Silent Winds and reaches the sacred grounds. The Temple of the Arc is where he receives his Mark, but something is off.

The Mark that appears on Vylus's skin is unlike anything Erik has ever witnessed. Neither Vylus nor Erik can fully grasp its meaning, but it's clear that something is different, and it's not a good sign.

As Vylus struggles to understand the power now bound to him, he finds himself facing dangers he's not prepared for. The Mark, meant to guide him into adulthood, may be a signal of something far worse. With his future uncertain and the village at risk, Vylus must figure out what this new power means and how to control it ─ before it controls him.

In a world ruled by tyranny, four teens are brought together to embark on a harrowing mission - to find the son of a god. *** "Sometimes some must die in order for the rest of us to survive." Ever since the condemned rebelled, the world of Desmond has been shrouded in darkness. Having ripped the throne away from the Creator Himself, King Motch keeps a firm-taloned grip on his subjects, aided by a ruthless, gifted being known as the Veiled Lady. Families are torn apart as parents are forced to give up their children to be raised by pitiless trainers who groom the children to become brain-washed warriors. All who fight back are dead. In a strict society built on the blood of the people, hope is a rare term. Yet it is still had. Against all odds, four lives are entangled. A timid boy brought from another world, a princess warrior on the run, a young soldier haunted by death and duty, and a slave boy with mysterious gifts - they are brought together to fulfill words spoken long ago: that a Deliverer would come and find the Creator's son, who, in turn, would save them all. Thrown into the fight of their lives, the four must work together to bring about a change in a dark and dangerous world. The mission the Deliverer has been given is a necessary one, a foreseen prophecy spoken of long ago. Therefore, Motch knows they are coming. And, as we all know, dragons love playing with their prey. David is ten and a half years old when he becomes the de facto family shepherd and he's twelve when a man called Agent Samuel declares David will be the next ruler of Israel. One of those things seems more likely to happen than the other, even with the strange man's reassurances, and David's not surprised when it turns out to be the sheepherding side of things. Initially, at least. However, time passes. Years pass. David becomes President Saul's unofficial musical therapist, developing a close friendship with his son Jonathan--the man who should be ruler next. He defeats Goliath, the result of genetic experimenting done by the Philistines, with nothing more than a rock and a slingshot, and quickly becomes a beloved hero of Israel. And the more experience that David gets, the more that people become obsessed with him, the more he is willing to concede that maybe that Agent Samuel guy was onto something. He's not the only one who sees his rise in popularity, though; President Saul is keeping a close eye on him, too. A deadly eye. And it soon becomes evident that David will either live to see himself become President or a legend forever remembered as the man who defeated Goliath. CAVALIER is a modern day retelling of the early life of King David, from when he first becomes a shepherd to just before he becomes ruler over Israel. It is a Featured work in the Spiritual section.
