"You lied to me!"
Lara's voice trembles as she stumbles backward, her breath visible in the freezing air.
The TRUTH is out.
The secret he swore didn't exist is now staring her in the face, and the boy she thought she knew-the one she foolishly trusted-is looking at her with nothing but a smirk.
"I trusted you, Peter!" she chokes out, desperation clawing at her throat. "Tell me it's not true-tell me this is some sick joke!"
Peter steps forward, tilting his head. "A joke?" he muses. "Now, that's funny. But no, Lara-this is very real."
Her pulse pounds in her ears as she inches back. The ground beneath her groans. The ice is thinner here.
Too thin.
"You don't have to do this," she pleads. "Please. I won't tell anyone. I swear!"
He exhales, his breath misting in the air. Then he smirks.
"If you die, the secret dies with you."
Then he turns away.
The ice cracks beneath her feet.
"Peter!" she screams as the frozen ground gives way, swallowing her whole.
The cold is like knives against her skin. The world turns black.
She reaches for him.
He doesn't move.
If only she had never gone on that ski trip.
If only she had stayed home.
If only she had never met him.
But it's too late now.
Because secrets are buried in the snow.
And some are meant to stay frozen.
