She had to run when the ninetails attacked, making a promise to return to Konoha when Naruto was of age to become a ninja, spending 12 years at Fairy Tail learning about her past, her brothers Natsu and the demons books, who she is the demon the Dragon Queen
You also don't need to have watched Fairy Tail to read this, Kaya's whole past is explained in an early chapter.
