In the war-torn kingdom of Valtheris, where noble houses wage shadow wars beneath a fragile peace, a nameless orphan girl-later named Nyx-is plucked from the streets by a clandestine organization known as the Black Veil. She is only six when she is chosen for her sharp eyes and unnatural calmness. The Black Veil, an elite guild of assassins, raises her in secrecy, training her in the art of long-range assassination and magical warfare.
By thirteen, Nyx is already a phantom on the battlefield, wielding a customized sniper rifle imbued with ancient runes, allowing her to fire enchanted bullets-some that explode on impact, others that phase through walls, or silence their targets before death. She can bend shadows to conceal herself, cast illusions to mislead enemies, and, in rare situations, use a dagger infused with dark energy.
Her life changes when she is assigned to assassinate Prince Caelum of Eldoria, heir to the throne and a supposed tyrant in the making. But upon infiltrating the palace, she discovers that he is not the villain she was told he was. Instead, he is trying to stop the warring factions from plunging the kingdom into chaos. When she hesitates for the first time in her life, her guild brands her a traitor.
Now, hunted by her former comrades and the kingdom's secret enforcers, Nyx must forge uneasy alliances with the prince and a rogue sorcerer to uncover the truth behind the guild's real motives. Along the way, she battles rival assassins, monstrous summoned creatures, and even the ghosts of her past-all while questioning if she is anything more than a weapon forged for death.
As the final battle looms, Nyx must decide: will she remain the invisible hand of death, or will she carve a new path for herself, one where she fights not for others-but for her own freedom?
'They pulled the chair across from me out and sat in it. The tavern carried on when the figure made themselves comfortable. My grip tightened on the hilt of the dagger. They pulled the hood of their cloak off and unclasped it. Their movements were relaxed and unhurried. I ran my eyes over him. He had strange black, swirling tattoos on his neck and long, pointed ears. His clothes were plain. I crossed my arms and sat back in my seat, keeping my eyes on his piercing midnight blue ones. He cocked an eyebrow. "Well?"
I narrowed my eyes. "Well, what?"
"What's your business here?"
"I should be asking you that, considering you silenced a room by being in it."
"Fair enough." He paused as the bartender brought another tankard over. "I'm looking for a travel companion." His voice was as deep as the shadows surrounding us.
"You're an elf... Don't they prefer to travel on their own?"
"Fae," he corrected as he pulled a pipe out of thin air. A black wisp of smoke surrounded his hand as he did so. "But yes, we do. I, however, have had enough of my thoughts being my only company." I nodded. "So?" He raised his eyebrows.
I shook my head sadly. "This is something I need to do. Alone."
"Alright." He looked a bit disappointed, which was odd, considering we had just met. '
