"Where did you get that?" His voice was low, dangerous, cutting through the drone of the asylum dayroom. He stood too close, smelling of expensive soap and something else... something metallic, sharp.
Eliza clutched the tarnished silver locket hidden in her pocket, her heart hammering. She hadn't shown it to anyone. How did he know?
"It's... it's mine," she whispered, trying to edge away. The other patients avoided his shadow, eyes cast down.
A cold smile touched his lips. "Is it? Or did Alice leave it behind?" He leaned closer, gaze pinning her. "Things get lost here. Memories. Names." His thumb brushed her cheekbone, a possessive gesture that sent shivers of pure dread down her spine. "But I remember everything, little rabbit. Don't worry. I'll help you find what's yours again."
She recoiled. "Stay away from me."
He laughed softly, the sound utterly chilling. "Silly girl," he murmured, his eyes never leaving hers. "You can't run from what's already inside you."
