When it was revealed that Voldemort was back, many of the Death Eaters' children were left without parents-their parents had been sent to Azkaban. Among the children were Mattheo Riddle, Theodore Nott, Lorenzo Berkshire, and Ophelia Crouch. The group claimed they would be able to make it on their own, but Dumbledore had already made other plans. He commissioned none other than Severus Snape to take in the group. And none of the five-not even Severus-were keen on the idea... at first.
