Fred tilted his head back, eyes tracing the stars like he could name them all. "Red string of fate?" he asked, voice low, almost careless.

I didn't answer right away. My gaze followed the constellations, soft and steady, like maybe I could see the thread myself if I looked long enough. "Mama always says it ties two people together," I said at last. "No matter how far apart they are. No matter what happens, it never really breaks."

He raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile tugging at his lips. "And you think this string's tying us together?"

I looked into his eyes, and for a moment I almost denied it. But the words slipped out before I could. "I don't think it's just a string, Fred."

His smile faltered as his eyes met mine, too steady for me to ever hold without falling for him.

"It's something that tugs at my heart every time you're near," I breathed. "An invisible thread that pulls me closer, even when I try to pretend it's not there."
