Centuries ago, the Fire Sages were renowned for having pledged their loyalty to the Avatar, serving them with their strength and soul. Each sage could speak to a previous incarnation of a Fire Nation Avatar through elaborate rituals that involved beating drums, burning sweetgrass, and meditating with a clear soul and mind. Unfortunately, over time, the sages' spirituality and resolve diminished, leaving behind empty shells of once-great men, who instead turned their dedication towards the Fire Lords.

Generations later, Araya was born to the Great Sage Hazano, a cold-hearted man who only craved a son to carry on the Fire Sage legacy. Araya became the first female Fire Sage, planting doubt in many hearts at High Temple in the Fire Nation, but Araya possessed an ability lost to time and betrayal -- the ability to speak with Fire Avatars.
