Still reeling after the death of his mother, Cole is forced to move in with his estranged aunt after his landlords decide not to renew his lease. His car, lovingly named Tracy, is a pile of crap. His bank account is down to the dregs. And to top it off, the new semester promises an unholy amount of coursework.

Meanwhile, Sophie is done navigating a secret summer romance with her campus newspaper's editor, Evan. Tired of Evan's hot-and-cold approach to their relationship, Sophie breaks things off as the semester begins, a decision that impacts her future with the school paper and leaves her spiraling.
